Community & Vocational
Community and Vocational is the avenue of Rotary which deals with
helping the local community. It does this by organising events and
by donating funds to worthy charities, clubs, schools and individuals.
The Stroke Awareness Day held on Saturday 18 June in Wellington
Town Square saw 26 Wellington Rotarians turn out to help a team
of medics to check the blood pressure (BP) and blood glucose of
members of the public. On the day from 10.00am to 4.00pm, 141 people
were checked and 2 people were sent straight to A&E with seriously
high BP. The real danger is that high BP can lead to a stroke and
you cannot detect when you have high BP, so a regular check is a
good precaution.
On 24 May 2011 we took 14 blind persons and their carers on a canal
trip on the beautiful Montgomery canal. Four of the "carers"
were guide dogs but as we had two 70ft narrow boats this was no
problem. Everyone enjoyed the sunny weather and to finish the day
off we all had strawberries and cream
The Helping Hand Concert on 5 May 2011for
the elderly and disabled attracted a capacity number of 120 and
was greatly appreciated. The Shrewsbury Police Male Voice Choir
was again a big success with Bob Mills their comic having the audience
in stitches. 120 teas, coffees and biscuits were served in 10 minutes
during the interval, a record that will be hard to beat.
The Gateway Club event held on Monday 4 October 2010 at the Ketley
Methodist Church was a big success with around 60 people attending
and all enjoyed the music, the fish & chip meal and the drinks
(non alcoholic of course).
