Higher Education Award

This Award was first introduced in 2006 and is aimed at Wellington students completing their 6th form studies. Each year students compete for the award by application and interview.

In 2017 President Brian Richards, assisted by chair of Youth Services Keith Mainwaring, presented the Higher Education Awards to former new College students Lara Wallace and Hattie Butler.

Lara is due to start studying for a mathematics degree at Aberystwyth University in September. She has used her award to provide specialist software for a tablet designed to enhance her studies. Hattie takes up a place at University College, Birmingham. She is to study specialist hair and media make-up and has used her award to fund the purchase of a specialist make-up kit to enhance her studies. Both recipients were presented with their awards at a meeting of the Rotary Club of Wellington on Friday 8th September.

They thanked the Club for the awards which are designed to enhance their studies in higher education. They both intend to maintain contact with the Club during their studies.

President Brian said, “The Rotary theme for this year is ‘Rotary:Making a Difference’. I hope that these awards to Hattie and Lara as they set out in their chosen careers will help make a difference to their lives”.

Former Award winner Katie Booth wrote thanking the Club for their help.  Her letter illustrated what can be achieved with a little halp.

"I wanted to take the time to give you an update on what I have been up to since receiving the HE Award from yourselves at the Rotary Club. Since I last saw you I completed my final year at university and received a First Class Degree in Fashion with BA Honours.

My digital work was selected to go to graduate fashion week where it had a great reception. Since graduation I have been interning at two design houses. One is Holly Fulton a printed textile fashion designer, where I had the chance to work with her and her team at London Fashion Week. I am now an intern with Ralph and Russo a luxury couture house in London - I am learning all about bespoke embellishment and helping create some really beautiful pieces of clothing.

I wanted to take the opportunity to thank everyone again as without your support it wouldn’t have been possible. If anyone at the club wishes to look at some of the clothes/designs I created at university then I have an up and running website www.katieboothdesign.com so you can check it all out there! Thank you once again."
