New College has recently opened a department called The National Hospitality School. This was created to offer students the chance to study and gain qualifications in tourism, leisure and hospitality. Course tutor Mr. Sean McNulty was very keen to offer the facility for the local heat of Young Chef and this was held on Thursday 14th January. Seven students from Telford schools took part.
The object of Young Chef is to shop, prepare, cook and serve a healthy and tasty main course plus dessert for £10. The competition began with 10 minutes preparation followed by 75 minutes of cooking time and 10 minutes serving and presentation time. The students were marked for cleanliness, skill taste of food and presentation by Rotarians Peter Seaward, Vic Young and Peter Williams along with Rose the chef from Buckatree Hall Hotel to provide much needed professional guidance.
The worthy winner was Sophie Mansell with a dish of Seared Salmon on a bed of Spiced Lentils followed by Lemon Curd Souffle. Sophie moves forwards with our support to the District Semi-Final to be held on 8th February at Stafford College.
