Principally to support our local Samaritans branch as well as other local Rotary charities, this year’s Film Evening was held on 30th October. Organised by Sophie Yates and Jim Tranter the film was the Stephen Spielberg cold war movie ”Bridge of Spies”. A notable thriller with many Oscar nominations and starring Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance who won the Oscar for best supporting actor. Choosing for the first time to hold our film night at the Charlton School’s new auditorium, Sophie and Jim were successful in bringing together well over 100 Rotarians and their guests and raising more than £1,500 of which £1,000 was presented at our next club meeting to the Samaritans’ local representative – Samaritan 272.

During the Cold War, the Soviet Union captures U.S. pilot Francis Gary Powers after shooting down his U-2 spy plane. Sentenced to 10 years in prison, Powers’ only hope is New York lawyer James Donovan (Tom Hanks), recruited by a CIA operative to negotiate his release. Donovan boards a plane to Berlin, hoping to win the young man’s freedom through a prisoner exchange. If all goes well, the Russians would get Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance), the convicted spy who Donovan defended in court.
