Sportsmen’s Evening March 2014

For very many years, since 1987 no less,Mike Dorricott has been the single handed organising force;behind our popular Sportsmen’s Evenings. Admittedly he has had help from the rest of the club particularly on the night but it has been his inspiration and organisation that has driven these events forward. This year was as successful as ever. After President Peter Martin had welcomed the guests and thanked our sponsors he introduced our main speaker, Jeff Probyn, the Wasps and England lock of the early 90’s. The amplification system in the room was not perfect but Jeff’s stories, mainly about the England team and international touring came thick and fast and with infectious enthusiasm. The supporting speaker, comedian Ian Rchards spoke a little carefully – there were ladies present – but there was no lack of laughter. His story about Harry Patch telling the Queen that missing the Lusitania’s last voyage contributed to his long life, was a pearl. Then it was time for the games. The raffle prizes (including a gallon of Whisky) having been dealt with, the stand up bingo prize (£500) came next and was won by a member of Alec Owen’s party.Mike reports the total sum collected for local charities will be a princely £3,958.
